讲座简介:
Urbanization was a central element in the modernization of Western cultures as the dominant social and geographical form of industrial capitalism. However, this account misses significant local inflections in the built environment and its associated forms of life, and also in the ways in which that urban experience was represented by and to those who lived in cities. The speakers - experts respectively in the cultural significance of the American and the British city - will compare literary and visual depictions of urban life over the last two centuries, focusing on London and New York City, and will initiate a debate about transatlantic urbanism.
