FU Mengxing

Dr FU Mengxing received her PhD in English from the City University of Hong Kong (2017), MA in Comparative Literature from University College London (2013) and her BA in English Language and Literature from Shanghai International Studies University (2012). She joined SHISU in 2017, first as post-doctorate researcher (2017-2019) and then as full-time lecturer.

Her research interests include nineteenth-century British fiction, the Gothic, fantasy literature, zhiguai and ghost stories, women's writing and contemporary Internet literature.

She has published articles in English and Chinese on British-Chinese comparative literature and the nineteenth-century zhiguai. Her recent monograph, The Perturbed Self: Gender and History in the Late Nineteenth-Century Ghost Stories in China and Britain (Routledge, 2021) is the first English language book on ghost stories and zhiguai from a comparative literary perspective. She is currently working on fantastic theories across cultures and fantasy literature in general.

Dr Fu is a visiting scholar with the School of Modern Languages, University of Bristol from September 2023 to September 2024.
