讲座题目：Found and Born in Translation: “Zhongguo” and its Case in Cultural Awakening

讲座内容简介：
It was suggested that the English terms "China” and "Chinese" do not translate the indigenous terms Hua, Xia, Han or even Zhongguo now or at any given point in history. How does the western use of "China" become an officially mandated term for this country to project a continuous historical entity from antiquity to the present? How does the people the west called "Chinese" identify their own country, its culture, language and population, particularly in a context that calls for parity in international relationship. We shall comb through history for a better understanding of the issues at heart. Upon this reflection, it may be apt and useful to re-conceptualise cultural turn in translation, and redefine cultural competence in terms of cultural confidence.
个人简介：
新加坡南洋理工大学博士，曾在任港城市大学语言信息科学研究所、香港科技大学计算科学系计算语言研究员，担任新加坡南洋理工大学、新加坡国立大学等高校教职，亦曾受邀到宁波大学外国语学院、上海海事大学外国语学院主讲语言学、英汉对比与翻译、翻译史及汉语言与文化。推动新加坡南大率先设立翻译副修，并开创翻译高级文凭班的课程模式。研究与教学范围包括现代汉语、近代汉语、汉语言与文化、社会语言学、翻译史、翻译理论与实践等，指导汉语语言学与翻译学博士生，出版编著《翻译与语言对比研究》、《汉语走向世界》、《语言的多视角考察》，合著Contrastive Linguistics: History, Philosophy and Methodology，发表中英论文数十篇。
