内容简介：
The French writer Michel de Montaigne initiated the use of the term essay, and his works have since represented the main features of the essay as a literary genre. Who are some of his forerunners in such an “experiment”? Why should Montaigne be considered not only as a representative of his time, the Age of Renaissance, but also a precursor of Modernity as well? What subjects does he cover in his three books of essays? What are some of the characteristics of his writings? How is Montaigne’s influence in the English tradition, and in particular, that on the development of the English essay from Francis Bacon, Addison and Steele, to Charles Lamb and William Hazlitt, and then onto Robert Louis Stevenson? Also, why should we study Montaigne and the great English essayists today, as Chinese students of English? These questions are to be addressed in the talk, and the speaker will share some of his “brainstorming” with his fellow teachers and students of English in the audience.
主讲人简介：
叶扬，比较文学博士，美国加利福尼亚大学终身聘职教授，复旦大学顾问教授。 英文著作成书付梓者，包括《晚明小品》（Vignettes from the Late Ming, 1999）、
《中国诗歌的结尾》（Chinese Poetic Closure, 1996）、以及两卷本英译《简明中国文学史》（A Concise History of Chinese Literature, 2011， 骆玉明原著）等，另有收入《长篇小说大典》（The Encyclopedia of the Novel, 2011）、《现代中国百科全书》（Encyclopedia of Modern China, 2009）、《别有洞天：亨廷顿流芳园之构建》（Another World Lies Beyond: Creating Liu Fang Yuan, the Huntington’s ChineseGarden, 2009）《英译文学大典》（Encyclopedia of Literary Translation into English,2000）等书籍以及发表于各期刊、杂志的文章、书评十余篇。中文作品除最近出版之文集《翰墨风流》（北京中华书局，2014年）及《覆水年华》（上海书店出版社，2012 年）之外，散见于《上海书评》、《上海文化》、《文汇报 ∙ 笔会》（自二零一三年三月起在《周末茶座》版开设《经典与画》专栏）、《文景》、《书城》、《万象》、《中国比较文学》、《无轨列车》、《人间世》等书刊；此外并有西方文学汉译数种付梓。
