讲座内容简介:

Drawing on 25 years working in New York City and referring specifically to her experience teaching and overseeing the NYU master’s program in translation, Prof. Julie Tay will provide a survey of recent trends and developmenting translation, highlighting some unique characteristics of the U.S. market and explore the range of opportunities and challenges pertaining to Chinese translators and interpreters working in N. America. This will be an informal discussion with ample time for students and faculty to pose comments and ask questions.  

个人简介:


Julie Tay is clinical assistant professor with NYU School of Professional Studies where she teaches graduate courses in Chinese into English translation. A native Singaporean now based in NYC, Tay is a lifetime translator, interpreter and cons

ultant,and also an artpresenter and ethnographer in her non-profit capacity as executive director of Mencius Society for the Arts. Working primarilyfrom Chinese into English, Tay and now specializes in language/cultural consulting; she has worked with a wide spectrum of direct clients ranging from SONY, Inc. General Electric, the US Department of Justice, NYC Department of Health, Global Strategies Group, New York State Department of Education, the City District Attorney, the HSBC, etc. Besides translation, Tay’slong standing research interests concern oral/folk traditions and counter-globalism; she is currently collaboratingwith former student Gao Siyang in co-translating/editing Dr. LipingLiao’saward-winningRang Ni Bu Shengbing(How Not to Get Sick), a compendium on traditional Chinese medicine for popular readership. Tay holds an M.A. in Anthropology (CUNY Graduate Center, 1994), a post-graduate Dip Ed. (National University) and a B.A with Honors in Linguistics & Anthropology (VUW, New Zealand).
