从上世纪末至今，互联网近乎普及全球，外语文本资源因而唾手可得。此外，各国双语乃至多语人才快速增长，使得中、西符号学之间的互动成为可能。例如，美国符号学家皮尔斯的符号三分法可用来研究中国文字，而中国学者钱钟书的修辞理论也可以帮助我们认清眼下正在走红的认知科学。这种跨文化的学术交流必将带来更加丰硕的研究成果。

With the rapid growth of bilingual or multi-lingual scholars in the 21st century, semiotic practitioners of different countries are now better positioned than ever to take advantage of each other’s textual resources which often result in new insights critical to the advancement of human knowledge. Two examples of such cross-cultural interaction are Charles Sanders Peirce’s trichotomy of signs being appropriated for the classification of Chinese characters and Qian Zhongshu’s classic theory of rhetoric serving as a critique of the bewildered and bewildering cognitive theory of metaphor championed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. It is in this sense that semiotics is becoming increasingly global or cross-cultural in addition to its interdisciplinary trademark.

丁尔苏，美国明尼苏达大学博士，先后执教于苏州大学、北京大学和香港岭南大学，现任上海外国语大学英语学院特聘教授，曾担任加拿大《符号学书评》（Semiotic Review of Books）编委和副主编（1997-2000）、国际比较文学学会常务理事（2000-2004），以及中国语言与符号学研究会副会长（1994-1998）。主要研究领域为英美文学、西方文论、语言哲学和符号学，学术成果包括《符号与意义》《超越本体》《现代悲剧》（译著）、Parallels, Interactions, and Illuminations: Traversing Chinese and Western Theories of the Sign，并在国内外学术期刊上发表论文数十篇。
